States Consider Dearness Allowance Hikes for Employees
Many states in India are thinking about giving their employees and retired people more money to help with the rising cost of living.
The central government already increased this money, called Dearness Allowance (DA), by 2% starting from January 2026.
Some states like Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal, and Kerala are also planning to increase DA.
This extra money is to help people deal with higher prices for things like food.
The government looks at something called the All-India Consumer Price Index (AICPI) to decide how much to increase DA.
Some people are hoping for another increase later this year because prices are still going up.
Punjab is considering payment of pending DA and DR dues for employees and pensioners from 1 July 2021 to 31 March 2024.
Himachal Pradesh is reviewing DA and pending arrears for state employees and pensioners, with a 3% DA hike effective from 1 April 2025.
West Bengal announced a 20% DA hike, taking it to 38% of basic salary, and is considering further increases to bridge the gap with central government employees.
Kerala is considering a 2% DA hike for August 2026 salaries, ahead of the Onam festival.
The central government increased DA by 2% effective from 1 January 2026, and there is speculation about a second hike later in the year.
