Kallakurichi Hooch Tragedy Report Calls for Official Accountability

Kallakurichi Hooch Tragedy Report Calls for Official Accountability

In June 2024, many people in Kallakurichi became seriously ill after drinking illegal liquor.

Seventy people died, and 161 were treated in hospitals.

A commission investigated what happened.

It said the liquor had been made dangerously by mixing methanol with arrack.

The report also said some police and government officials failed to stop the illegal trade.

It recommended stronger rules for handling methanol and action against officials who were negligent or corrupt.

Families who lost relatives should receive food, shelter, healthcare, education and future job help.

Survivors should receive extra compensation and low-interest loans to start small businesses.
