Government Plans Separate Census for Vulnerable Tribal Groups
The Indian government wants to count a specific group of vulnerable tribes, called PVTGs, separately in the next census.
This means they'll collect detailed information about how these groups live.
PVTGs often have smaller populations, live in isolated areas, and face challenges with their way of life and education.
This data will help the government understand their needs and run programs to help them.
The government already has a large program (PM JANMAN) to improve their lives and this count will help them target their resources effectively.
Having an accurate count helps in knowing whether the criteria used to identify these groups still applies.
The Ministry of Tribal Affairs requested the Registrar General of India to enumerate PVTGs separately in the upcoming Census.
PVTGs are a sub-category of Scheduled Tribes with specific vulnerabilities.
The enumeration aims to capture demographic, cultural, and socio-economic features of PVTGs.
A government survey estimated 47.5 lakh PVTGs across India.
The data will help in the implementation of targeted schemes like PM JANMAN.
