Meghalaya NGO opposes border fencing
A group in Meghalaya, India, called CCIB, is against building a fence along the border with Bangladesh.
They say the fence, which is planned to be 150 yards away from the border line, will take away land from the people living there.
The group wants the fence to be much closer to the border, like in another state called Tripura.
The government says they are trying to get the land needed to build the fence, but the people are worried they will lose their land.
Some areas are not fenced yet because people there don't want to give up their land, which makes those areas unsafe.
Meghalaya NGO CCIB opposes border fencing with Bangladesh, fearing loss of land for residents.
Fence planned 150 yards from Zero Line per 2015 India-Bangladesh Land Boundary Protocol.
Residents unaware of agreements and not consulted, unwilling to part with land.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma assures efforts to acquire land for full 443-km fencing.
Some border areas remain unfenced due to landowner opposition, leading to security concerns.
