Greece Charges More Coast Guard Officers in 2023 Migrant Shipwreck
A boat carrying many people trying to reach Europe sank in the sea near Greece in June 2023.
Sadly, most people on the boat drowned, with only a few survivors.
Investigators in Greece are looking into what happened.
Now, some of the people who were in charge of helping, called coast guard officers, are facing more serious accusations.
This is because lawyers for the people who survived or died felt that more officers should be held responsible.
A prosecutor agreed and added charges for four more officers, including a high-ranking one.
This means more people from the coast guard are being investigated for their role in this terrible event.
Greek prosecutors have charged four more senior coast guard officers in connection with the 2023 migrant shipwreck off Pylos, bringing the total indicted to 21.
The charges stem from an appeal by lawyers representing victims and survivors, who argued additional officers were involved in the incident's handling.
The shipwreck of the overcrowded boat Adriana occurred on June 14, 2023, in international waters, with an estimated 750 people on board and only 104 known survivors.
In May, 17 coast guard officers were initially charged by a Greek naval court.
Coast guard authorities have consistently denied any wrongdoing regarding their handling of the case.
