Government Eyes Interest Subsidy for MSMEs to Boost Exports
The government is thinking about giving small and medium-sized businesses (MSMEs) money to help them borrow at lower interest rates.
This is to help them sell their goods to other countries, making them more competitive.
An old program that gave this help stopped in December 2024.
The new plan is part of a bigger effort to support exports, with a special budget for it.
Businesses want this help because global trade is uncertain and tariffs are changing.
About 85% of the businesses that received the old help were MSMEs.
Export numbers remained flat last year, and global trade is expected to shrink this year.
Government considers reintroducing interest subsidy for MSMEs to boost exports.
The subsidy is part of the proposed Export Promotion Mission announced in the FY26 budget.
The previous interest equalization scheme ended in December 2024.
MSMEs face higher interest rates than competitors in export markets.
Export bodies seek support due to global demand slowdown and tariff uncertainties.
