Why Jeans Have Tiny Front Pockets: A 150-Year-Old Design

Why Jeans Have Tiny Front Pockets: A 150-Year-Old Design

Long ago, in 1873, workers like miners, ranchers and labourers wore tough pants called blue jeans.

They carried pocket watches, which were very valuable.

If they kept the watch in a regular pocket, it could get scratched or broken while they worked.

So jean makers sewed a small, strong pocket inside the front right pocket.

That tiny pocket held the watch safely.

Later, people started wearing wristwatches instead, so the tiny pocket was no longer needed.

But jean makers kept it because it is part of the classic design of jeans.

Today, people use the little pocket for coins, rings, earbuds, USB drives and other small things.

The pocket reminds us that some clothing details were made to solve real problems long ago.
