Historic Pamban Bridge Opens for Final Time
The old Pamban bridge in Tamil Nadu, India, was opened one last time on January 21, 2026.
This bridge, built over 100 years ago by the British, is very special because it was India's first sea bridge.
It has been very strong and has survived many storms and earthquakes.
Now, a new, stronger bridge has been built, and the old one will soon be taken down.
Before that happens, they opened it one last time to let boats and ships pass through.
The old bridge was built by a man named Karoji Kutz and his team of 200 workers using a lot of steel.
It was a big deal when it was built and has been very important for connecting the island of Rameswaram to the mainland.
The historic Pamban railway lift bridge was reopened on January 21, 2026, for the last time.
The bridge, built in 1914, is India's first sea bridge and a significant engineering marvel.
Dismantling of the old bridge is expected to begin next week after the final opening.
The bridge was constructed by a Gujarat-based contractor using 2,000 tonnes of steel and 200 workers.
A new vertical-lift railway bridge replaced the old structure, opening in December 2025.
