BLOs Protest Over Deaths, Stress in Bengal
Booth-level officers (BLOs) in West Bengal are very upset and protested in front of the office of the West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer.
They say that the Election Commission (EC) has not been taking care of them while they are doing their job to update the voter list.
Many BLOs have been feeling very stressed and some have even died because of the tough work.
The protesters want the EC to help them by making their workload easier and giving them money if they get sick or die while working.
The voter list in West Bengal has recently been updated, and many names have been removed, which has made the situation even more tense.
The West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, has accused the EC of using AI tools developed by the BJP to wrongly delete voters’ names.
The BJP, on the other hand, has accused the state government and the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of obstructing the revision process.
The EC has instructed BLOs in Uttar Pradesh to read out the draft electoral rolls to voters to ensure the success of the programme.
Booth-level officers (BLOs) protested in Kolkata against the Election Commission of India (ECI) for alleged indifference to their deaths and stress during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
BLOs claimed they are under tremendous mental and physical pressure due to the revision exercise, with reports of multiple deaths and stress-related breakdowns.
The protesters demanded immediate intervention, workload rationalisation, and a formal compensation policy for BLOs engaged in the SIR exercise.
The draft electoral rolls published on December 16, 2025, showed the electorate in West Bengal shrinking from 7.66 crore to 7.08 crore, with over 58 lakh names deleted.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused the EC of using AI tools allegedly developed by the BJP to wrongly delete voters’ names, leading to the exclusion of genuine voters.
