India's Renewable Energy Surge: Solar-Wind Output Rises 25%
India's solar and wind energy production increased by more than 25% in the first half of 2026.
This means that solar and wind energy now make up 16.5% of India's total electricity, up from 14% last year.
Solar energy grew by over 30%, and wind energy increased by about 10%.
Despite this growth, coal energy also increased by 3.5% to meet higher electricity needs.
Gas energy, however, decreased by 15% compared to the same period last year.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) reports that renewable energy has now become the largest source of electricity worldwide, surpassing coal.
Globally, renewable energy is expected to grow by 8% in 2026 and 9% in 2027.
Solar energy is the main driver of this growth, with a forecasted increase of 23% this year.
India and other Asian countries will play a bigger role in this solar energy expansion.
India's solar and wind electricity generation surged by over 25% in the first half of 2026.
Solar generation in India rose by more than 30% during January-June, while wind output increased by slightly less than 10%.
Coal-fired generation increased by 3.5% to meet stronger electricity demand and a record peak load of 270.8 GW in late May.
Gas-fired generation decreased by about 15% in the first half of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025.
Global renewable generation is forecast to grow about 8% in 2026 and another 9% in 2027, increasing its share in the electricity mix from 33% in 2025 to 37% by 2027.
