Kerala Requests Extension for SIR Date
The Kerala state government asked the Supreme Court to extend the deadline for submitting forms for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.
The state said it needs more time because local body elections are happening at the same time, which causes logistical problems.
The Supreme Court told the Election Commission to consider Kerala's request sympathetically and make a decision quickly.
The Election Commission had already extended the deadline once, but the state said government employees need more time to submit their own forms.
The Supreme Court also noted that while the Election Commission doesn't have any problems, some political parties do.
The state had earlier asked the High Court for help, but the High Court told them to go to the Supreme Court instead.
The Supreme Court is also looking at other challenges to the SIR exercise, including concerns that it might be creating an indirect National Register of Citizens (NRC) without Parliament's approval.
Kerala requested an extension for submitting enumeration forms under the SIR exercise due to overlapping local body elections.
The Supreme Court asked the Election Commission to consider the request sympathetically and make a decision by the next day.
The Election Commission had already extended the deadline from December 4 to December 11.
Kerala argued that government employees on election duty need more time to submit their forms.
The Supreme Court noted that while the Election Commission has no issues, some political parties do.
