Telangana Ends 2-Child Policy for Local Polls
The Telangana government has decided to stop a rule that said people with more than two children couldn't run for local government jobs.
This rule was made a long time ago to help with too many people, but now there are fewer babies being born.
The government thinks this change will help more people be able to run for office and keep the population balanced.
Everyone in the government agreed to this change, but they also said the government should still work on keeping the population stable.
Some people worry that this change might make people think the government doesn't care about family planning, but the government says it's just a smart adjustment.
Telangana's legislative assembly unanimously passed a bill to abolish the two-child norm for local body elections.
The policy, in place since 1994, disqualified individuals with more than two children from holding office in Gram Panchayats.
The Total Fertility Rate (TFR) in rural Telangana has dropped to 1.7, below the national replacement level of 2.1.
The repeal aims to remove legal barriers for thousands of previously ineligible citizens to contest local body polls.
The bill replaces an earlier ordinance that removed the two-child rule for municipalities but not rural bodies.
