MISHTI Scheme Aims to Protect Mangroves
The MISHTI scheme is a government initiative to protect and restore mangrove forests along the coast.
Mangroves are special trees that grow in salty water and help protect the coast from storms and floods.
They also prevent salty water from entering farmlands.
The scheme has been running for about two and a half years, but only a small part of the money allocated has been used so far.
Some states like Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh have a lot of mangroves, but others like Maharashtra and Kerala are not participating much.
The workshop in Vijayawada brought together forest officials to talk about how to make the scheme more successful.
Andhra Pradesh has a lot of mangroves and is working hard to protect its coastlines.
The MISHTI scheme aims to restore degraded mangrove forests and improve coastal livelihoods.
The scheme has been under implementation for two and a half years with 10% of National CAMPA funds earmarked for it.
Only Rs 100 crore out of the total Rs 825 crore allocation has been utilized so far.
Andhra Pradesh has the third-largest mangrove cover in the country, with about 50,000 hectares.
Mangroves act as natural barriers against cyclones, floods, and storm surges, and their conservation helps safeguard farmers’ fields and coastal livelihoods.
