Kashmir Experiences Coldest Night of Season as Temperatures Drop Below Freezing
Imagine the Earth breathing out all its heat at night.
When the sky is clear and the air is still, like on Monday night in Kashmir, that heat escapes into space very quickly.
This makes the ground and the air above it much colder.
Several places in Kashmir, like Shopian and Pahalgam, got so cold that the temperature dropped below freezing, making it the chilliest night of the year so far.
Even Srinagar, the big city, felt the cold.
This is a sign that winter is really starting to arrive, and people should get ready for icy roads and maybe frozen water pipes.
Kashmir Valley experienced its coldest night of the season, with temperatures plunging below freezing in multiple locations.
Shopian recorded the lowest temperature at -4.0°C, making it the coldest district in the division.
Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of -1.8°C, Pahalgam -3.2°C, Qazigund -1.5°C, and Kupwara -1.8°C.
The ski resort of Gulmarg recorded 2.0°C, with hopes for early snowfall.
The India Meteorological Department cited clear skies and calm winds as reasons for the intense cold snap, predicting persistent sub-zero temperatures.
