Chennai Airport Seeks Obstacle Removal for Efficiency
Chennai Airport wants to remove things like buildings and poles near the secondary runway to make it longer and safer for big planes.
Right now, these things are making the runway shorter, so big planes can't land when the main runway is being fixed.
The airport also plans to increase the number of flights and passengers it can handle.
They are also building a new terminal, but it will be finished later than planned.
A committee will talk to different groups to help clear the obstacles.
Chennai Airport aims to remove 260 obstacles to extend the secondary runway from 2,110m to 2,890m.
Obstacles currently reduce the secondary runway length, limiting the use of large aircraft during primary runway maintenance.
The airport plans to increase aircraft movements to 45 per hour and handle 70,000 passengers daily.
A committee will engage with stakeholders, including the State Government, to clear the obstacles.
Terminal-3 completion is delayed to October 2026, with Phase-II expansion costing ₹2,500 crore.
