Puducherry CM Seeks 25% Quota for Natives in Pondicherry University
The Chief Minister of Puducherry, N. Rangasamy, has asked the central government to make sure that 25% of the seats in all courses at Pondicherry University are reserved for people from Puducherry.
He said this has been a long-standing demand and that the university was set up to help local students get better education opportunities.
Right now, only 18 out of 64 courses have this reservation, and the Chief Minister wants it to be extended to all courses.
He also mentioned that other institutions in the area already have similar reservations for local students.
He hopes the government will take action to make this happen.
Puducherry Chief Minister N. Rangasamy submitted a memorandum to the Vice-President seeking 25% reservation for Puducherry natives in all Pondicherry University courses.
The demand has been pending for several decades and reflects the aspirations of the government, people, and student community of the Union Territory.
Pondicherry University initially introduced 25% reservation for Puducherry natives in 1997 for eight courses, later expanded to 18 courses.
The Puducherry Assembly passed a resolution seeking 25% reservation in all 64 courses, and a committee recommended uniform reservation across all courses.
The Chief Minister argued that the university's founding Act mandates fulfilling regional aspirations, and other institutions in the area already have similar reservations for local students.
