Canada's Carney Government Survives Key Budget Votes, Averting Election
Imagine Canada has a government that doesn't have enough friends in parliament to pass its plans all by itself.
This government proposed a big plan for spending money, called a budget.
It needed help from other groups to get it approved.
There was a worry that if they didn't get the budget passed, everyone would have to vote again for a new leader, like a mid-winter election.
But, some people from another group decided to help them, and the government passed the important votes.
This means they can spend the money they planned to.
The government says this spending will help Canada's economy grow for a long time.
Because they got the votes, it looks like they will not have an election soon.
Canada's minority Liberal government, led by Prime Minister Mark Carney, has survived two confidence votes on its budget.
The survival of the budget votes eases fears of a potential winter election.
The budget includes tens of billions of dollars in new spending aimed at reshaping Canada's economy.
The government's ability to pass the budget depended on support from opposition members.
The projected deficit for 2025-26 has increased to C$78.3 billion.
