Net direct tax collections rise 23.09% to ₹8.11 lakh crore

The government needs money to run the country, and it gets a lot of it from taxes.

Some taxes are called direct taxes — the money people and companies pay from what they earn.

Each year, the government keeps track of how much tax money it has collected.

Just recently, it shared its newest numbers, and they show the government collected a lot more money than last year.

Net direct tax collections grew by about 23% compared with the same time a year earlier.

One reason is that people paid more in income and other non-corporate taxes.

The government also collected about 51% more money from a tax on buying and selling shares.

At the same time, the government gave back less extra money, called refunds, compared with last year.

Because it kept more money, the amount the government can spend grew faster than its total collections.

More tax money helps pay for things the country needs, like schools, hospitals, roads, and public services.
