Centre Sets New Emission Targets for Heavy Industries
The Indian government has set new rules to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from industries like petroleum refineries, petrochemical units, textile, and aluminium.
These rules were announced on January 13, 2025, and made public on January 16, 2025.
The goal is to make these industries produce less pollution for each unit of product they make.
This is part of a plan to start a domestic carbon market where companies can trade carbon credits, which they have been doing since 2023.
The government first proposed these rules in June 2025 and finalized them now.
The Centre has notified the second round of emission reduction targets for high-emission sectors.
Targeted sectors include petroleum refineries, petrochemical units, textile, and secondary aluminium.
The Greenhouse Gases Emission Intensity (GEI) Target (Amendment) Rules were notified on January 13, 2025, and published on January 16, 2025.
These sectors will be brought under the domestic carbon market as part of the Carbon Credits Trading Scheme (CCTS).
The draft of these rules was first published in June 2025.
