Rupee Hits Record Low Amid FPI Outflows
The Indian rupee hit a new record low of 92.00 against the US dollar and then recovered slightly to close at 91.88.
This happened because foreign investors were selling a lot of Indian stocks, and there were worries about global politics and the economy.
The Indian stock market also fell, with the Sensex and Nifty 50 losing about 1% each.
Meanwhile, foreign direct investment (FDI) into India increased by 73% in 2025, reaching $47 billion.
This was because of big investments in services like finance and IT, and in manufacturing.
The global FDI also increased by 14% to $1.6 trillion.
The rupee's fall was also affected by exporters delaying the return of their sales money and the RBI not stepping in to support the currency.
Analysts think the rupee might keep falling in the short term but could stabilize with RBI intervention.
The Indian rupee hit a record low of 92.00 per USD and closed at 91.88 due to persistent FPI outflows and weak domestic markets.
FPIs sold equities worth Rs 16,267 crore in January 2026, contributing to the rupee's decline.
The Sensex and Nifty 50 fell by about 1% each, with broader market indices like mid-cap and small-cap suffering steeper declines.
FDI inflows to India surged by 73% to $47 billion in 2025, driven by large investments in services and manufacturing.
Global FDI reached an estimated $1.6 trillion in 2025, a 14% increase, with significant investments in data centres and AI infrastructure.
