Anthropic Says Claude Found CRISPR-Like System in Bacteriophage DNA

Anthropic says its AI, Claude, helped scientists find a new DNA-related system in viruses that infect bacteria.

The system may be able to cut, copy and paste DNA.

Some of its actions resemble CRISPR, a tool scientists use to edit genes, but Anthropic says it is not CRISPR.

Other scientists still need to check whether the discovery is truly new and important.

Claude searched biological information for about 21 hours with help from many AI agents.

People, not AI, carried out the experiments in the laboratory.

Anthropic says the lab uses lower biosafety levels and does not work with human-infecting pathogens.

The discovery raises questions about how much biological research AI might help automate in the future.
