IIT Bombay Launches BharatGen for Indian AI
IIT Bombay has started a new company called BharatGen to make AI tools that understand Indian languages and culture.
This company is not like usual startups; it's run by IIT Bombay itself.
They want to build AI that works well for India, using over 22 Indian languages and making sure it understands Indian ways of talking and thinking.
The company has a lot of money from the government to help it grow.
They are working with other top schools and companies to make this AI.
BharatGen wants to make sure that Indian people can use AI easily and that it helps with important things like farming, shopping, and understanding documents.
They also want to share some of their AI tools for free so that other people can use them too.
The government has also started a program called FutureSkills PRIME to teach people new technologies.
Over 15.78 lakh people have already learned from this program.
Big companies like Microsoft and Amazon are also investing a lot of money in AI in India.
This is helping India become better at AI, but there are still some challenges, like keeping the best people working in India and making sure there are enough computer parts to build AI tools.
IIT Bombay launched BharatGen Technology Foundation, a not-for-profit entity, to develop a sovereign, multilingual AI model tailored for India.
BharatGen is fully owned and operated by IIT Bombay, with substantial funding of Rs. 1,293 crore from the government.
The foundation aims to build AI models fluent in over 22 Indian languages, dialects, and cultural nuances, with applications like e-VikrAI, Krishi Saathi, and Patram.
BharatGen collaborates with top academic institutions, startups, and government agencies to pool expertise and resources.
The initiative emphasizes data sovereignty, training exclusively on Indian datasets to avoid biases and ensure cultural relevance.
