NASA and Lockheed Martin's X-59 Test Flight Promises Quieter Supersonic Travel
NASA and a company called Lockheed Martin have built a new airplane named the X-59.
This special plane is designed to fly faster than the speed of sound.
Usually, when planes fly this fast, they make a very loud noise called a sonic boom, which is not allowed over land.
The X-59 is made to make a much quieter sound, like a gentle thump.
This first flight was important to check if the plane was built correctly.
If this quiet, fast flying works, it could mean that future airplane trips could be much shorter, like going from New York to Los Angeles in less than three hours.
This is a big step towards making very fast air travel possible again, but quietly.
NASA and Lockheed Martin's X-59 experimental supersonic jet completed its first test flight on Tuesday, October 28.
The X-59 is designed to fly faster than the speed of sound while producing a quiet 'gentle thump' instead of a loud sonic boom.
Current regulations prohibit supersonic flights over land due to the disruptive noise of sonic booms.
The initial test flight took place over the Southern California Desert and focused on confirming the aircraft's structural integrity and handling.
Successful development of the X-59 could enable significantly reduced travel times for future commercial flights, potentially cutting coast-to-coast trips by nearly half.
