Bombay HC Indicates Bail for Corporator Mhatre in Assault Case

A local leader named Ramesh Mhatre is accused of hurting three doctors who were working at a hospital in Dombivli, India.

The doctors were on duty when the assault happened, and doctors across Maharashtra were very upset and held protests.

The police arrested Mhatre, and a lower court first let him go free.

Then the Bombay High Court, a very important court, stopped that and kept him in custody.

Now the High Court says he can be released again, but only with very strict rules.

He must stay outside Maharashtra until the police finish their paperwork, called a chargesheet, which may take about two weeks.

He must also give up his passport, not talk to the doctors or witnesses, and check in with a local police station three times a week.

The court said a person cannot be kept in jail forever just because an investigation is still going on.

Doctors' groups asked the court not to release him because they are afraid for their safety, and the court will decide more on August 8.
