TIFF Midnight Madness Eyes Next Low-Budget Breakout Hit

TIFF Midnight Madness Eyes Next Low-Budget Breakout Hit

TIFF’s Midnight Madness section shows unusual and exciting movies late at night.

Last year, a very cheap movie called Obsession became a huge box-office success.

This year, the horror movie River attracted a deal worth more than $10 million.

River is about siblings trapped on a boat by masked killers.

Other films mix horror with romance, comedy, action, satire, or animation.

Director Anna Biller says her movie The Face of Horror is serious, even though some viewers may call it camp.

The festival also gave its Midnight Madness audience award to Ladies and Gentlemen, Brian Mulroney.

Filmmakers and industry observers are wondering whether more small, bold movies can become major hits.
