Vande Mataram’s National Song Compromise and Its Six Stanzas

Vande Mataram’s National Song Compromise and Its Six Stanzas

Vande Mataram began as a longer poem.

Jawaharlal Nehru asked Rabindranath Tagore for his opinion about using it as a national song.

Tagore already supported the song and had performed it publicly in 1896.

However, he thought the complete poem could concern Muslims when understood in its original context.

He said the first two stanzas could be treated separately.

This meant people would not have to connect the national song with the entire poem.

They also would not have to connect it every time with Anandamath.

This understanding became the compromise described in the article.
