Chennai's Poondi reservoir nears full capacity
Chennai's Poondi reservoir is almost full because of good planning and lots of rain.
The Tamil Nadu Water Resources Department asked Andhra Pradesh to stop releasing water from the Kandaleru reservoir so Poondi could fill up naturally.
Now, Poondi has about 96% of its water capacity.
This means Chennai has enough water for at least the next year.
The city's other reservoirs are also quite full, so the water supply is stable.
The water from Poondi is sent to the Red Hills reservoir for treatment before being distributed to the city.
Officials are confident that Chennai will have enough water for the next year.
Chennai's Poondi reservoir is 96% full, holding 3,114 mcft of water out of its 3,231 mcft capacity.
The WRD requested Andhra Pradesh to halt water release from Kandaleru reservoir to allow Poondi to fill naturally.
Combined storage across six reservoirs is 11,749 mcft, ensuring water supply for at least the next 11 months.
Daily water supply to consumers has increased to 1,230 mld, up from 1,091 mld last year.
Other reservoirs like Veeranam, Cholavaram, Red Hills, and Kannankottai Thervoikandigai are also at comfortable storage levels.
