Former Janpad CEO Arrested Over Rs 30 Crore Scheme Scam
The government of Madhya Pradesh runs a program that gives money to eligible couples for mass weddings.
Officials say about Rs 30.18 crore may have been improperly taken from this program.
Sobhit Tripathy, a former local government officer, has been arrested by the Enforcement Directorate.
The agency says he worked with others to send money to suspicious beneficiaries.
Tripathy was the CEO of Sironj janpad panchayat from 2019 until November 2021.
He had previously been suspended over alleged problems in running the scheme.
A court sent him to the Enforcement Directorate’s custody until September 9.
The investigation began after a police financial-crimes unit filed a case.
The Enforcement Directorate arrested former Sironj janpad panchayat CEO Sobhit Tripathy in an alleged Rs 30.18 crore scam.
Tripathy was arrested under Section (1) of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002, the ED said.
He was produced before a local court and remanded to ED custody until September 9.
The case stems from an FIR filed by Madhya Pradesh’s Economic Offence Wing against Tripathy and others.
The alleged irregularities involved disbursing government wedding-scheme funds to suspicious beneficiaries between 2019 and November 2021.
