Trump Halts Afghan Immigration After White House Shooting
On November 26, 2025, a man named Rahmanullah Lakanwal, who came to the United States from Afghanistan as a refugee, shot two National Guard members near the White House in Washington, DC.
The two guards, Specialist Sarah Beckstrom and Staff Sgt.
Andrew Wolfe, were badly hurt and taken to the hospital.
Lakanwal was also shot and taken to the hospital.
He came to the U.S. in 2021 under a program that helps people from Afghanistan who are in danger.
Some people think he might have done this because of terrorism, but the reasons are still being looked into.
The President of the United States, Donald Trump, said the person who did this is very bad and that the country needs to check on all the people who came from Afghanistan under the previous president's rules.
The police and the FBI are still looking into what happened.
After the shooting, the U.S. government stopped processing all immigration requests from Afghan citizens to review security and vetting protocols.
The Trump administration is also reviewing all asylum cases approved under the Biden administration.
Additionally, 500 more National Guard members were ordered to Washington for extra security.
Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan refugee, shot two National Guard members near the White House on November 26, 2025.
The victims, Specialist Sarah Beckstrom (20) and Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe (24), were critically injured and hospitalized, while Lakanwal was also shot and taken to the hospital.
Lakanwal entered the U.S. in 2021 under 'Operation Allies Welcome,' a program for Afghan refugees.
Authorities are investigating the incident as a potential act of terrorism, with reports of Lakanwal shouting 'Allahu Akbar' during the attack.
President Donald Trump condemned the attack and called for a re-examination of the immigration status of Afghan refugees who entered under the Biden administration, and ordered a review of all asylum cases approved under Biden.
