Taiwan President to Defend Military Buildup as Peaceful

Taiwan’s president, Lai Ching-te, is preparing a speech for the island’s national day.

He is expected to say that spending more on defence is not meant to provoke anyone.

Taiwan says stronger defences can help its people protect their freedom and keep peace.

A Taiwan official also said Lai will talk about making society more resilient.

Taiwan reported that Chinese military aircraft and ships had operated near the island.

China says Taiwan is part of its territory and that its military can operate nearby.

Taiwan’s government strongly objects to that claim.

The two governments do not formally recognise each other.
