India's Q2 GDP grows 8.2%, fiscal deficit widens
India's economy grew by 8.2% in the second quarter of the fiscal year 2025-26, which is higher than what experts predicted.
This growth was mainly because of strong performance in manufacturing and services.
The government also reported that the fiscal deficit for the first seven months of the year reached 52.6% of the target.
The fiscal deficit is the difference between what the government earns and what it spends.
The government spent more on building things like roads and bridges, which is called capital expenditure.
Overall, the economy is doing well, but the government needs to manage its spending carefully.
India's real GDP grew by 8.2% in Q2 FY26, surpassing estimates and marking a significant increase from 5.6% in the same quarter last year.
Nominal GDP growth stood at 8.7%, driven by strong performance in the secondary (8.1%) and tertiary (9.2%) sectors.
Manufacturing and construction sectors grew by 9.1% and 7.2% respectively, while agriculture saw a moderate growth of 3.5%.
India's fiscal deficit for April-October reached 52.6% of the FY26 target, with net tax receipts at ₹12.74 lakh crore and total expenditure at ₹26.26 lakh crore.
The strong economic growth and higher-than-expected fiscal deficit may influence the Reserve Bank of India's decision on interest rates in the upcoming policy meeting.
