DRI Seizes 7.8 Kg Smuggled Gold, Arrests Six

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence found gold that officials say had been smuggled into India.

They seized about 7.8 kilograms of gold worth more than Rs 11.5 crore.

Officers found most of it in a car travelling toward Kolkata from near the Bangladesh border.

They found more gold with passengers at two railway stations in West Bengal.

Six people were arrested, including someone officials describe as an alleged smuggling syndicate leader.

The people arrested reportedly did not have papers showing that the gold was legally obtained.

Officials said smugglers used roads and trains to move gold toward eastern markets.
