NATO: Why Two Names and Their Meanings
NATO, the group of countries working together for defense, has a name in both English and French.
NATO is what it's called in English and OTAN is how it's known in French.
This is because France, a founding member, uses French as an official language, along with English.
Both names mean the same thing, it is not the English word backwards.
NATO's name, in French, is Organisation du traité de l'Atlantique nord (OTAN).
OTAN is not simply NATO backwards, it is the French acronym.
France was a founding member of NATO, hence the French name.
NATO has two official languages: English and French.
