Why Hazrat Mahal Was Forgotten Despite Resisting British Rule

Awadh was a kingdom ruled by Wajid Ali Shah.

In 1856, the British took control of it and sent the king away.

Hazrat Mahal stayed behind and became an important leader of resistance.

She tried to defend Lucknow and support her young son, Birjis Qadr.

Her allies did not always agree with one another.

Many soldiers had lost their jobs and pay, which made the situation more chaotic.

British troops captured Lucknow again in 1858.

Hazrat Mahal continued fighting and eventually escaped to Nepal.

For many years, people remembered another rebel queen more than they remembered her, but her role has since received greater attention.
