Nepal begins PR election registration
Nepal is getting ready for its next big election.
They have two ways to choose people for their government: one where the person with the most votes wins, and another where seats are shared fairly among different groups.
Right now, political parties are signing up to be part of the fair share system.
They have to make sure that at least a third of the people they choose are women, and half of the people on their list must be women.
The election will happen on March 5 next year, and the list of people running will be finalized by February 3.
Many new political parties, especially ones that young people support, are also joining in.
Registration for political parties to contest Nepal's parliamentary elections under the proportional representation (PR) system began on December 8, 2024.
The House of Representatives has 275 members, with 165 elected under the First-Past-The-Post (FPTP) system and 110 under the PR system.
Political parties must submit their applications for registration by December 11, 2024, and the final closed list of candidates by December 29, 2024.
At least 33% of the members elected from each political party must be women, with a mandatory 50% women in the closed list for the PR category.
117 political parties have registered to contest elections under the FPTP system, including new parties representing Gen Z.
