Supreme Court Allows Tolls on Madurai-Tuticorin Highway
The Supreme Court has temporarily allowed the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to collect tolls on the Madurai-Tuticorin highway, even though the road is in bad condition.
A lower court had previously stopped the toll collection because of the road's poor state.
The Supreme Court is now considering the issue after hearing arguments from both sides.
The road users say they shouldn't pay tolls on a bad road, while the NHAI argues that many people need to use the highway daily.
The Supreme Court will make a final decision later.
The Supreme Court stayed a Madras High Court order regarding toll collection.
The Madras High Court previously prevented toll collection on the Madurai-Tuticorin highway.
NHAI appealed the High Court's decision.
Senior Advocate P Wilson, representing the respondents, opposed the stay.
The Supreme Court will hear the matter fully later.
