Bill for Single Higher Education Regulator
The Indian government is planning to introduce a new bill in Parliament next week.
This bill is called the Viksit Bharat Shiksha Adhikshan Bill.
It aims to create a single regulator for all higher education institutions, except for medical and law colleges.
Currently, there are three different regulators: the UGC for general education, the AICTE for technical education, and the NCTE for teacher education.
The new regulator, called the Higher Education Commission of India (HECI), will have three main roles: regulation, accreditation, and setting professional standards.
However, funding for these institutions will still be managed by the administrative ministry.
The goal is to make universities and other higher education institutions more independent and to improve the quality of education through a transparent system.
The Viksit Bharat Shiksha Adhikshan Bill aims to establish a single higher education regulator, the Higher Education Commission of India (HECI).
The bill is likely to be introduced in Parliament next week after receiving the Union Cabinet's approval.
HECI will replace the UGC, AICTE, and NCTE, but medical and law colleges will remain exempt.
The regulator will focus on regulation, accreditation, and setting professional standards, while funding will be managed by the administrative ministry.
The goal is to promote independence, self-governance, and excellence in higher education institutions.
