India Proposes Aadhaar-like IDs for EV Batteries

India Proposes Aadhaar-like IDs for EV Batteries

The Indian transport ministry has suggested giving each electric vehicle (EV) battery a special number, like an Aadhaar ID, to track it from start to finish.

This 21-character Battery Pack Aadhaar Number (BPAN) will help monitor the battery's life, including its use, recycling, and disposal.

The idea is to make the battery system more transparent, accountable, and eco-friendly.

EV batteries are a priority because they make up most of India's lithium-ion battery demand.

The plan is to involve various stakeholders, like manufacturers and recyclers, to make sure the system works well.

The BPAN will be placed on the battery in a way that it won't get destroyed or fade over time.

Any major changes to the battery, like recycling or repurposing, will get a new BPAN.
