Can Laos Tourism Lift the Nation Out of Poverty?
Laos is trying to use tourism to make its people richer.
The city of Luang Prabang is doing well, with lots of tourists visiting and spending money.
This has helped many families escape poverty.
But, Laos owes a lot of money.
Some worry that not all tourists help the local people because some groups spend their money in businesses that are not locally owned.
However, some experts believe that tourism, combined with improvements in areas like agriculture, could help Laos to reduce poverty.
Luang Prabang saw a 162% increase in visitors YoY as of April 2025.
Luang Prabang generated $560 million (€491 million) in revenue last year.
Over 16,000 families in Luang Prabang have moved out of poverty.
Laos's public debt was $13.8 billion, which was 108% of the country's GDP.
Some analysts warn that not all tourists benefit the local population.
