Serbian President Vucic Resigns Ahead of October Parliamentary Vote

Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic resigned before his term officially ended.

He said he had served the country faithfully.

Ana Brnabic, who was parliament’s speaker, will temporarily become president.

Serbia must hold a new presidential election within 90 days.

The campaign for that election will last between 30 and 60 days.

Vucic expects the first round to happen by the end of December.

Serbia will also hold a snap parliamentary election on October 25.

Vucic’s party is competing against a student-led movement and pro-Western opposition parties.

Vucic could become prime minister if his party forms the next government.
