Trump and Canada Escalate Trade Fight Over Retaliatory Tariffs

The United States and Canada are arguing over tariffs, which are extra taxes on goods traded between countries.

Their trade talks broke down, making the disagreement worse.

Canada said it would respond with tariffs on some American products.

One report said those tariffs would target US steel and dairy and begin on September 8.

Another report said Canada was still expected to announce the measures on Tuesday.

The reports therefore give different timelines for Canada's action.

The United States has already imposed 50-percent tariffs on about $20 billion of Canadian goods.

President Donald Trump also threatened more tariffs on Canadian vehicles, auto parts and steel.

Prime Minister Mark Carney said the US actions could harm Canadian workers and industries.
