Bioceres and Colorado to Commercialize Drought-Tolerant Wheat
Bioceres, an Argentine company, is teaming up with the Colorado Wheat Research Foundation to bring a drought-resistant wheat to US farmers.
This wheat, called HB4, is genetically modified using a sunflower gene.
The US government approved it in August 2024.
It will take 3-4 years before farmers can use it.
Bioceres will give the Colorado group rights to the wheat in the US.
The collaboration will work to make this available to other companies and farmers.
The Argentine firm will need to secure approvals in export markets.
Bioceres and Colorado Wheat Research Foundation are collaborating to commercialize drought-tolerant GM wheat in the US.
The wheat, HB4, uses a sunflower gene for drought tolerance.
The US Department of Agriculture approved HB4 wheat cultivation in August 2024.
Adoption of the new wheat variety by farmers is expected in 3-4 years.
The collaboration aims to create climate-resilient wheat production and improve supply stability.
