Harmanpreet Factor: India Need Captain Firing at Hockey World Cup
Hockey is a fast game, and one of the most important moments is the penalty corner.
In a penalty corner, one player shoots the ball powerfully towards the goal, and India's captain Harmanpreet Singh is great at it.
His shots helped India win bronze medals at the last two Olympic Games.
India is about to play in a huge World Cup, and they have not won it in 51 years.
Harmanpreet has been hurt many times, and other teams have learned how to block his shots.
Because of this, he has scored fewer and fewer goals.
India's coach made new plans for his food and training so he can stay strong.
The team also practised many penalty corners and trained other players to shoot too.
When Harmanpreet scores, India wins almost 66 percent of the time.
That is why the whole team hopes he will play his best at the World Cup.
The men's Hockey World Cup starts Saturday, with India hoping captain Harmanpreet Singh's fitness and form can help end a 51-year wait.
Harmanpreet has battled hamstring, lower back, ankle, wrist and finger injuries over the past two years, and received treatment during a Bengaluru training session before joining the drills.
His penalty-corner conversion rate was 17.07 percent at the Paris Olympics, where he was top scorer with 10 goals, compared with about 25 percent for German and Belgian flickers.
Head coach Craig Fulton says a new nutrition and training regime has Harmanpreet improving week by week, while India are building backup flickers in Jugraj Singh, Amit Rohidas, Rajinder Singh and Sanjay.
India's win percentage rises to almost 66 percent when Harmanpreet scores, but his goal tally has dropped from 42 in 33 matches in 2023 to 2 in 10 matches so far in 2026.

Declining form
His goal tally and conversion rate have fallen sharply (2 goals in 10 matches this year, 17.07% at Paris versus about 25% for rivals), and repeated injuries suggest a fading specialist.
Evolving game
The game has caught up with one of its most closely studied specialists, with better defences and aggressive runners; Harmanpreet remains hard to replace since India's win percentage rises to nearly 66% when he scores.
