Himachal Pradesh Elections Postponed Amid Disputes
The Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, announced that the elections for Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRI) and Urban Local Body will be postponed until the Disaster Management Act is lifted.
This decision comes after the state faced severe natural disasters, particularly in areas like Seraj, Mandi, Kullu, and Chamba.
The Chief Minister explained that the Disaster Management Act of 2005 is currently in force, limiting the powers of the State Election Commission.
He assured that the elections will be conducted as per the Constitution, within six months of the end of the current tenure.
The opposition BJP members staged a walkout after the Chief Minister's reply, expressing dissatisfaction with the postponement.
The government also announced a financial grant of Rs 1 lakh to disaster-affected families for purchasing household items.
In the assembly, there was a heated exchange between the ruling Congress and the BJP over the adjournment motion and the Question Hour.
The Speaker ruled that adjournment motions will be limited to a single day, and the House resumed the discussion on the adjournment motion.
