Chinese Humanoid Robots Surpass Bolt Benchmark at Beijing Games

Chinese Humanoid Robots Surpass Bolt Benchmark at Beijing Games

Two Chinese humanoid robots ran 100 metres faster than the fastest official human time.

Tiangong Ultra finished its competition heat in 9.39 seconds.

Lightning finished the heat in 9.47 seconds, but it had earlier run a 9.32-second test.

Usain Bolt’s official human record is 9.58 seconds.

These robot times do not replace Bolt’s record because robots and human athletes compete under different rules.

The robots also had trouble stopping safely.

Tiangong moved toward the sidelines, while Lightning fell and was carried away.

The results show how quickly engineers are improving robot speed and movement.
