Mass Screening Urged for Thalassaemia, Sickle Cell Anaemia in Konduru
Doctors in Vijayawada want to test many people in Konduru to find out if they have special blood diseases called thalassaemia and sickle cell anaemia.
These diseases are passed down from parents to children and can make people very sick.
The doctors had a big meeting where they taught people about these diseases and gave free blood tests.
They said it's important to find out early if someone might get these diseases, especially when a mom is pregnant.
They also warned not to take too much iron without a doctor's advice.
The group that organized this has been helping people with kidney problems for seven years and will now also help with these blood diseases.
Health experts urged mass screening in Konduru mandal to detect thalassaemia and sickle cell anaemia.
An awareness programme and free blood testing camp were organized by the Public Health Forum and the Indian Academy of Pediatrics.
Both thalassaemia and sickle cell anaemia are genetic disorders affecting red blood cell production and shape.
Screening tests like HPLC for pregnant women between 14 and 16 weeks can help determine the risk of the child being affected.
Experts warned against self-medication with iron supplements without medical advice to avoid complications.
