GST Council Recommends Faster Registration Detail Amendments
The government has explained how businesses can register for GST online.
People start on the GST portal and choose the new-registration option.
The papers needed depend on whether the business premises are owned or rented.
The GST Council has recommended making some business-detail changes simpler and faster.
These include changing a business’s legal name or adding another place of business.
For certain Rule 14A taxpayers, changing the main business address would also be processed automatically.
Other taxpayers may still need an officer to approve a main-address change.
If there is no problem with a Rule 9 application, the officer should approve it within 15 days.
If the officer spots a problem, the applicant gets a notice and must reply within seven working days.
The government’s 9 October FAQs explain how to apply for GST registration and update business details through the GST portal.
Applicants begin online registration under Services > Registration > New Registration; required documents vary by premises type.
The 57th GST Council meeting recommended clearer documentation and changes to Form GST REG-01, including document-selection drop-downs.
Legal-name, business-constitution and additional-place amendments are proposed to become non-core and process automatically; principal-place changes would be automatic for Rule 14A taxpayers.
For Rule 9 taxpayers, principal-place amendments should be approved within 15 days if there are no discrepancies; response and officer-action deadlines apply if a notice is issued.
