Assam Seeks Shift From Resource Supplier to Manufacturing Hub
Assam’s chief minister says the state is trying to make more products instead of just sending its raw materials elsewhere.
He opened a factory that makes tiles and a facility that processes milk.
The tile factory will use clay from the Karbi hills and is expected to create many jobs.
The dairy facility can handle 20,000 litres of milk.
It will be developed with help from COMFED, a dairy organization from Bihar.
Sarma also said the government had reclaimed land and planned to create more jobs.
He said other industries could also come to Dighali Chapori.
Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated a dairy processing facility and a tile manufacturing unit in Jamugurihat.
The tile factory, a joint venture involving Lohiya Group and Vermora Group, was built with an investment of about Rs 250 crore.
The plant will use China clay from the Karbi hills and is expected to provide 325 direct jobs and more than 1,000 indirect jobs.
The dairy facility can chill and process 20,000 litres of milk and is to be developed with Bihar’s COMFED.
Sarma said Assam had reclaimed 1.5 lakh bighas of land and outlined plans for jobs and further industrial projects.
