Fauci Invokes Fifth Amid Senate COVID‑19 Hearing
Anthony Fauci, a former top U.S. scientist, was asked questions by Republican senators about how the COVID‑19 virus started.
He said he would not answer because the questions might hurt him in court.
He told the senators that the hearing was a way to make him say something that could get him in trouble.
Senator Rand Paul, who asked the questions, said Fauci lied about how the virus was studied in China.
Some other senators and scientists said the hearing was unfair and that scientists should not be attacked.
The hearing could lead to a vote that might punish Fauci, but he already has a pardon from President Biden.
The whole debate is about whether the virus came from a lab or from animals.
The U.S. intelligence community is still divided on this question.
Fauci invoked the Fifth Amendment during a Republican‑led Senate hearing on July 29, 2026, refusing to answer questions about COVID‑19 origins and federal research.
Senator Rand Paul subpoenaed Fauci, released thousands of pages of his diary, and accused him of misleading Congress over NIH‑funded gain‑of‑function research in Wuhan.
Democratic senators and scientists criticized the hearing as a politically motivated vendetta and called for restraint against vilifying scientists.
The hearing could lead to a contempt of Congress vote and legal complications, especially after President Biden’s 2025 pre‑emptive pardon of Fauci.
The debate centers on whether the COVID‑19 virus leaked from a lab, with U.S. intelligence agencies divided and China rejecting the lab‑leak theory.
