Sensex Climbs 374 Points on Reliance Buying; Nifty Ends Flat
On Thursday, India's stock market had a mixed day.
The Sensex, one of India's biggest stock indexes, went up by nearly 374 points and closed at 78,954.
The Nifty, another big index, finished almost exactly where it started.
The gains were helped by lower crude oil prices and by people buying shares of big companies like Reliance Industries.
Reliance's shares went up by more than 3 percent, the most among big companies.
Earlier in the week, the stock exchanges started a new system for deciding the closing prices of certain shares.
That new system has made the two main indexes behave differently since Monday.
Around the same time, India's central bank, the RBI, decided to keep interest rates the same for the fourth time in a row.
It also thinks the economy will grow a little faster and that prices will rise more slowly this year.
Because of all this, many investors felt more confident about India's economy.
The Sensex climbed 373.76 points, or 0.48%, to settle at 78,954.76, while the Nifty edged up 11.35 points, or 0.05%, to end at 24,636 on Thursday.
Reliance Industries climbed 3.43%, the most among blue-chip stocks, with ICICI Bank, State Bank of India, Bharat Electronics, Eternal and Titan among the major winners.
The Reserve Bank of India kept its policy repo rate unchanged at 5.25% for the fourth consecutive meeting, with a 'neutral' stance and a unanimous vote by the six-member Monetary Policy Committee.
The RBI marginally raised its GDP growth forecast for the current fiscal to 6.7% while slightly lowering its inflation projection to 5%.
A new Closing Auction Session (CAS) mechanism, operational since Monday, has caused divergence between the benchmark indices, while Brent crude traded 0.13% lower at USD 79.35 per barrel.
